Enjoy a walk in the countryside with our resident archaeologist talking through points of interest.

This year sees the return of the Archaeology Walks Programme with nine walks taking place between May and September. Three walks take place on Saturday mornings, three on Tuesday mornings and three on Thursday evenings. New walks include Bignor Hill and Amberley Wildbrooks, along with some old favourites like Cissbury Ring, Highdown and Chanctonbury Ring.

As always James will be bringing along genuine artefacts from the museum collections to give attendees the opportunity to handle items in the locations they were originally found.

Burpham Downland – “Village, Hills and Valley”
The small village of Burpham has a long and fascinating history stretching back to the early Bronze Age. We will explore the Anglo-Saxon fortifications alongside the beautiful early Norman church, before heading off onto the Downs where we will see a real palimpsest of archaeological remains.

The walks are graded by difficulty – some involve more climbing than others! It is advisable to bring water to all of the walks, and a bite to eat on Saturday sessions. Dogs are welcome on a lead.
