One lucky art enthusiast was given the opportunity to curate an exhibtion

To help raise much needed funds during the pandemic and subsequent temporary closure of the Museum and Art Gallery, an extra special ‘reward’ was made available through our Crowdfunding campaign; one member of the public would become a ‘Curator for a Day’, and select their favourite works of art from amongst our permanent collection to go on display in the Norwood Gallery in their very own exhibition!

This lucky person was Janet; an art enthusiast who had always been interested in the behind-the-scenes aspects of curating exhibitions, and who was thrilled to have a chance to have a go herself.  Along with museum staff, Janet spent two half days looking through the art store, choosing from amongst the huge range of paintings, prints and drawings in the collection.

Curator of Art and Exhibitions, Emma Walder, and Assistant Curator, Sarah Hobson, provided Janet with some important information to help her make her choices. They talked safely handling the various types of artistic media and their individual storage and display requirements, as well as discussing both the highlights of the art collection and the lesser displayed works too. Janet was drawn to so many of the fantastic examples in our collection, that whittling down the longlist of favourites was perhaps the biggest challenge of all.

This exhibition brings together Janet’s final choices and some insight into how and why she made her selections.

Please Note This exhibition is free but donations are gladly welcomed. No need to book, just turn up.
