A Contemporary Costume Collection Exploring the 80s to the 00s.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, students from two local schools and participants from local charity Superstar Arts took part in a contemporary costume collecting project called Cutting Edge. Responding remotely to the music and culture of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s in a series of online challenges and object based research with items from the museum’s costume collection - they helped acquire donations of clothing, accessories, footwear, hats, bags and jewellery from the late 20th century and early 21st century - enhancing the museum’s nationally recognised collection of everyday wear.

Highlights include a hand finished, trademark Trilby hat, donated by Boy George and a dress donated and worn by Amy Hart to the National Television Awards in 2020.

These fantastic pieces, together with 50 publicly gifted high street or shop bought items join our fantastic collection for future generations to study and enjoy in our new state of the art, Costume Research Centre.

Cutting Edge is a National Lottery Heritage and Clothworkers funded project.
