Enjoy a walk in the countryside with our resident archaeologist talking through points of interest.

This year we are hosting our biggest ever Archaeology Walks Programme with eleven walks taking place between May and September. Seven walks take place on Saturday mornings, two on Tuesday mornings and two on Thursday evenings. New walks include Kingley Vale and The Caburn along with some old favourites like Cissbury Ring, Highdown and Chanctonbury Ring.

For most of these walks our resident archaeologist James Sainsbury will be bringing along genuine artefacts from the museum collections, giving attendees the opportunity to handle items in the locations they were originally found.

Bignor Hill – ‘Farmed Landscapes and Marching Romans”
Bignor Hill hosts of plethora of archaeological remains – not least the Roman road of Stane Street, burial mounds and the Neolithic enclosure at Barkhale. On this walk we’ll explore these features, along with the preserved remains of ancient farmsteads and fields under the woodland canopy.

The walks are graded by difficulty – some involve more climbing than others! It is advisable to bring water to all of the walks, and a bite to eat on Tuesday and Saturday sessions. Dogs are welcome on a lead.
