  • Description

Enjoy a walk in the countryside with our resident archaeologist talking through points of interest.

This year we are hosting our biggest ever Archaeology Walks Programme with eleven walks taking place between May and September. Seven walks take place on Saturday mornings, two on Tuesday mornings and two on Thursday evenings. New walks include Kingley Vale and The Caburn along with some old favourites like Cissbury Ring, Highdown and Chanctonbury Ring.

For most of these walks our resident archaeologist James Sainsbury will be bringing along genuine artefacts from the museum collections, giving attendees the opportunity to handle items in the locations they were originally found.

From James
“We are all extremely lucky to live in an area that not only has outstanding natural beauty, but also outstanding archaeological remains. I hope during these walks I can communicate and share my passion for these ancient places and the peoples who once lived, walked, loved and died within the landscapes we inherited today”

Highdown Hill – “Roman Bath & Saxon Cemetery”
Highdown Hill dominates the coastal plain, with views from the Isle of Wight to the Seven Sisters. People have been drawn to this eminence for thousands of years, with archaeological finds from all eras discovered at the site. Perhaps the most famous are the remains of over 200 Anglo-Saxon settlers, who were buried with rich grave goods, some of which will be available for handling. This is a shorter walk with a moderate climb to the top of the hill.

2 miles – easy difficulty

Please Note
The walks are graded by difficulty – some involve more climbing than others! It is advisable to bring water to all of the walks, and a bite to eat on Tuesday and Saturday sessions. Dogs are welcome on a lead.
