  • Description

A free talk on cultural diversity and biodiversity with artist Dr Gil Mualem-Doron and researcher George Short, Kelp Recovery Coordinator, Sussex Wildlife Trust.

The event will include a guided walk through the exhibition and a short film about the restoration of the Sussex Kelp Forests.

In his talk Gil will be charting how Interweaving Spaces’ immersive installation came about – from a Palestinian-related intervention in a gallery in Tel Aviv, Israel through the New Union Flag project – an artistic attempt to change the Union Jack that was exhibited in places such as the South Bank Centre, Tate Modern and currently is at the National Maritime Museum, to his time as an activist and journalist on the environment and re-engaging with the fight for climate justice. Mualem-Doron is known for his fast-paced talks so prepare to sit on the edge of your seat throughout.

George will discuss the history of the devastation of the Sussex Kelp Forests due to years of destructive human activity including trawling. Also, how a landmark decision by the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority led to the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project, the UK’s largest marine rewilding programme.

Join George to see fantastic footage from beneath the waves right here in Sussex, and hear more about the science behind this huge conservation effort and where we are along the journey to recovery.

After the talk there will be an informal Q&A.
