  • Description

Our hugely popular lecture series returns on Thursday evenings this October and November.

An intimate season of talks with our Archaeology Curator James Sainsbury and a guest speaker. Explore a wide range of subjects from Worthing in the Neolithic, the stories of Cissbury, Chanctonbury Ring and Highdown, through to the Norman Conquest and Worthing in the Great War. This year social historian Beth Collard will be giving a brand new lecture on the Pioneering Women of Worthing, as well as her fascinating talk on Harry Peuleve, a Worthing-born SOE agent active in Europe during World War II.

About the talk

In this lecture, James will look at the huge changes wrought upon Sussex as a result of William’s decisive victory at Hastings. Sussex was on the front line of the conflict in 1066 and would continue to be a military zone for years to come.

This talk will look at how this affected the local population, with the construction of castles, new towns and the introduction of a new landed class. Were there any elements of Saxon Sussex left by the time the Domesday Book was compiled just twenty years after Harold lost his kingdom?

Ticket price includes a glass of wine or tea/coffee.
