Part of our Powell & Pressburger Season, though this film came after their partnership and was directed solo by Michael Powell.
Mark, a young porn photographer and obsessive amateur filmmaker, prowls Fitzrovia with his 16mm camera in search of women to film. A frank exploration of voyeurism and violence, Michael Powell’s extraordinary film is the story of a psychopathic cameraman -his childhood traumas, sexual crises, and murderous revenge as an adult. By forcing us to share Mark’s murderous point of view, we become complicit in the unsettling acts.
Reviled by critics upon its initial release in 1960 for its deeply disturbing subject matter, the film nearly ended Powell's career, it has since been hailed as a masterpiece that 63 years on remains audacious, provocative and one of the greatest and most unsettling films about filmmaking ever made.
