
About The Big Dig: Open Day
Join us for our Big Dig Open Day and explore ancient Anglo-Saxon skills, find out what we've uncovered so far, take a tour, create your own piece of heritage and more at this special free event. Whether you're into history, crafts, or nature, there's something for everyone. See the below for details.
Living history group, Weorod will be with us throughout the day with demonstrations of the Anglo-Saxon way of life.
All events are free, no need to book.
Tours, 10:30am, 12pm & 2pm
Take a tour of the site and find out about the history of the area.
Tours take place from Highdown Gardens and will last approximately one hour.
Flint Knapping demonstrations,10:30am - 3:30pm
Discover how ancient people crafted tools from stone in these demonstrations. demonstrations. Watch as flint is shaped into arrowheads, blades, and more using traditional techniques.
Tension Tray Workshop, 11am – 1pm
Young adults can enjoy a willow weaving workshop and make a heritage tension tray.
Roman coins and Saxon brooches, 2pm - 4pm
Children can enjoy making Roman coins and Saxon brooches with our Education Officer.
About The Big Dig
The Highdown Big Dig 2025 sees Worthing Museum join forces with the National Trust Archaeology and Worthing Archaeological Society for this community Big Dig. This project is part of the Council for British Archaeology’s annual Festival of Archaeology. All excavations are open to public viewing throughout the project, from Sunday 20th July to Thursday 31st July.
