Acclaimed musical version of the classic book by Alice Walker

Celie Harris is an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s. Torn apart from her sister and her children, Celie faces many hardships in life, including an abusive husband, but with support from a sultry singer named Shug Avery, as well as her stand-her-ground stepdaughter, Celie ultimately finds extraordinary strength in the unbreakable bonds of a new kind of sisterhood.

A story of the powerful connection between three unbreakable women, Alice Walker's classic novel The Color Purple is transformed into a profound, unforgettable big-screen musical.

Our thoughts
The stage musical of this story has been racking up plaudits since it's premiere. We are excited for the fantastic cast - particularly Danielle Brooks. It looks uplifting and fun, while conveying some deeper subject matter, not an easy feat to do. After Spielberg's version was cruelly snubbed at the Oscars in 1985, lets see if this version fares any better.

★★★★★ Bazawule’s cast takes your breath away. Los Angeles Times
★★★★ An all-singing, all-sobbing weepie with sequins, featuring comedy (and) uproarious choreography The Telegraph
★★★★ A mix of gospel, pop, blues and ballads, all of that coming together smoothly in one exuberant film BBC
