The opening concert of WSO’s 2022-23 Season welcomes the fourth member of the hugely talented Kanneh-Mason family, to the Assembly Hall stage. Previous concerts have features brothers Sheku and Braimah as well as sister Isata, and WSO is delighted on this occasion to welcome Jeneba.
She plays Rachmaninoff’s ever popular Second Piano Concerto a work synonymous with David Lean’s classic 1945 film ‘Brief Encounter’ and one which magically combines intense romantic lyricism with pianistic virtuosity and brilliant orchestral colours.
The season opens with the overture to Rossini’s last opera William Tell. The overture is more akin to a symphonic poem with the skilled depiction of shepherds calling across the mountains to each other and a rip-roaring finale popularly known as ‘The Lone Ranger’.
Dvorak’s Symphony No 9 “From the New World” reflects both on his time in America but also on his nostalgic feelings for his beloved Czech homeland. It includes one of his most beautiful slow movements, known by many for its use in a famous Hovis Bread advert.
