About Remarkable Women in the History of Art: Hildegard Von Bingen

Mystic, composer and visionary of the Middle Ages

Join Monika Lind, retired university lecturer in Culture and Humanities Studies, for an insightful talk exploring the life and legacy of Hildegard von Bingen, one of the most extraordinary women of the 11th century.

Also known as the Sibyl of the Rhine, Hildegard was a Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, painter, philosopher and healer. Her influence extended across religion, music and medicine, making her one of the most significant figures of the medieval period.

At a time when women were rarely heard in public life, Hildegard was a bold and outspoken voice. She challenged church corruption, preached openly despite restrictions on women, and led with authority in a male-dominated society. Though controversial in her lifetime, she was widely respected for her visions, music and medical writings, and was later recognised as a saint.

This talk explores her remarkable achievements, her defiance of societal expectations, and her lasting impact on cultural and intellectual history.
