About Remarkable Women In The History of Art: Women of the Dutch Golden Age

Rediscovering female artists of 17th-century Netherlands

Join Monika Lind, retired university lecturer in Culture and Humanities Studies, for an insightful talk exploring the overlooked contributions of women artists during the Dutch Golden Age.

While this influential period in art history is often associated with male painters, many women were active, innovative and highly skilled artists in the 17th-century Netherlands. Despite facing restrictions in formal training and professional recognition, they developed successful careers, particularly in still-life painting and portraiture.

This talk will examine the work and legacy of these artists, focusing on two outstanding figures: Clara Peeters and Judith Leyster. Through their stories and artworks, we gain a deeper understanding of the challenges women faced and the lasting impact of their creativity.

Part of WTM’s Remarkable Women in the History of Art series, this event highlights the lives, achievements and often-overlooked contributions of women in art history.
