About Sashiko with Jayne Eagle

Workshop aim - to learn how to create sashiko style stitching - a Japanese form of hand sewing. Also, an introduction to the cultural history of Boro and Sashiko, looking at how it evolved from repair to embellishment, is discussed throughout the workshop. Sashiko uses small running stitches to mend and strengthen woven fabric. This session provides a wonderful introduction to this type of textile technique. During this workshop, learners will work on Sashiko stitch designs whilst learning how to draw and create traditional patterns onto fabric swatches without the need of templates, equipping you with the skills to continue sewing at home. Different types of fabric will be used, including a quilted piece.

Who is this suitable for? - Beginner-friendly, no experience needed. This is an Introductory workshop to Sashiko.

Workshop outcomes - Learners would be able to work the Sashiko running stitch in a variety of patterns. And know a variety of ways to mark up Sashiko patterns and designs.

Materials - all materials (fabric swatches, threads etc), tools, and handouts I would provide.

Please note that I work with recycled textiles in my workshops.

Jayne Eagle | About me

My love of textiles has run throughout my work, from a fine art practice to the teaching of hand sewing and mending skills. I work with used textiles, reworking/repurposing them, and am a champion of keeping their precious commodity in circulation. I have been teaching workshops to adults for the last 9 years, originally at The Friends Education Centre and then for Sew Fabulous, both in Brighton, E.Sussex. The workshops have been well-received. I’ve included a few reviews left connected with similar workshops I’ve run in the past.
