About The Devils

Restored. Remastered. Uncensored. For the first time ever.

The Devils is not a film for everyone....
Inspired by the true story of 17th-century priest Urbain Grandier, accused of bewitching a convent of nuns, The Devils lays bare the collusion of church and state through a searing vision of religious persecution, collective hysteria and institutional corruption. The restoration many believed would never happen reaffirms Russell’s incendiary masterpiece as among the most overwhelming and uncompromising achievements in British cinema.

Famously championed by film critic Mark Kermode, who promised Ken Russell he would find the long lost footage of the film. Recently introducing the film Kermode states that the film has aged remarkably well due to its core themes - Mass brainwashing, institutional corruption and political theatre - resonate just as strongly today.  Oliver Reed stated that The Devils was his finest role.
