Xiphactinus Fossil
An insight into the collection
Approximately 145 to 66 million years ago, the Cretaceous period was characterised by fossils from a time when the Tethys Ocean covered the area. Ancient marine life on display includes ammonites, belemnites, lobsters, echinoids, and the fierce, predatory, bony fish Xiphactinus.
The collection also includes Jurassic marine reptiles, such as ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, the apex predators of their era.
Quaternary period artefacts, including mammoth tusks and teeth, cave bear claws, sabre-tooth cat teeth, and wild horse fossils, tell the story of Ice Age Sussex.
