An insight into the collection
The textile collection is diverse, spanning pieces from the 17th century to the present day. It is divided into decorative and domestic textiles. Our collection of embroidery includes beadwork, wool work, and whitework. Samples date back to 1664, and embroidered pictures, worked in wools and silks, date from around 1650. We also hold two suffragette banners carried by local groups, illustrating how needlework is used to communicate and decorate.
Fabric samples, apprentices’ miniature garments, and darning specimens are also included. An extensive lace collection features hand-made and machine-made lace, while our domestic textiles include pillowcases, tea towels, dusters, and tablecloths. Another point of interest is our collection of decorative and functional quills, dating back to the 1800s.
