About Women In The Lives Of Great Artists: Alma Mahler

The collector of geniuses

Join Monika Lind, retired university lecturer in Culture and Humanities Studies, for a compelling talk exploring the life of Alma Mahler — one of the most fascinating and influential figures of early 20th-century European culture.

An Austrian composer, writer, and socialite, Alma Mahler married composer Gustav Mahler at the age of 22. Although her own composing career was curtailed early on, her life and influence extended far beyond her marriage.

Often described as “the collector of geniuses”, Alma formed relationships with some of the most prominent figures in music, painting, architecture and literature. Known for her charisma, intelligence and cultural influence, she has been referred to as both the last femme fatale of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and one of the most captivating women of her time.

This talk explores Alma Mahler’s complex life, her role within a remarkable artistic circle, and how she came to be known as “la grande veuve” — the great widow.
