About Women in the lives of Great Artists: Artemesia Gentileschi

A pioneering artist of the Italian Baroque

Join Monika Lind, retired university lecturer in Culture and Humanities Studies, for an illuminating talk on the life and work of Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the most important painters of the Italian Baroque.

Working initially in the dramatic style of Caravaggio, Gentileschi was producing professional work by the age of 15, despite the limited opportunities available to women in the 17th century. Her powerful artistic voice and distinctive style set her apart as a leading figure of her time.

Her life was marked by significant personal adversity, and her experiences deeply influenced the strength, intensity and emotional depth of her paintings. Today, she is recognised not only for her technical skill but also for the bold and compelling narratives present in her work.

In 1616, she became the first woman admitted to the Florentine Academy of the Arts of Drawing, a groundbreaking achievement that secured her place in art history.

This talk explores Gentileschi’s remarkable career, her artistic legacy, and the challenges she overcame to succeed in a male-dominated world.
