About Worthing Philharmonic Orchestra: Visions of Virtuosity - Rachmaninov, Scriabin & Parry

WPO pairs works by two of the greatest Russian pianist-composers: the virtuoso  Sergei Rachmaninov and the visionary Alexander ScriabinRachmaninov’s enduringly popular Piano Concerto No. 2 will be played on this occasion by Coulsdon and Purley Festival winner Ryan Sheng, himself a young virtuoso pianist of astonishing talent.

Scriabin’s Symphony No. 2 is both a grand statement within the broader late Romantic century symphonic tradition, and a prophetic hint at things to come in this composer’s highly individual orchestral writing, inspired by his mystic-philosophical worldview.

Parry’s Symphonic Variations open the programme. They remain one of his most popular works and a fine example of the various forms.

Programme:

Parry: Symphonic Variations

Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2

Scriabin: Symphony No. 2

Ryan Sheng, Piano Soloist
