How can Clothes be Art, the exhibition is the culmination of the Arts Council funded project created by Chelsea Newton Mountney.
How can Clothes be Art explores the varying ways creativity exists within our clothing. The project invited participants from the local area to textile art and fashion history workshops held here at Worthing Museum, who partnered on the project and provided mentorship, workshop and exhibition space.
The project asks - What if we see our clothes as a creative medium? Our garments as storytellers, our wardrobes as living archives? Then can we slow down the consumption of clothes?
The exhibition includes artwork created throughout the project and explores themes of sustainability and creativity through Worthing’s historical dress collection. These garments tell us of different histories from those of high fashion and give us clues on how to transform our fashion system into one, that is not only more sustainable but also more creative.
