About Summer Walks 2026 - Burpham Downland

Discover thousands of years of history hidden within one of the South Downs’ most picturesque landscapes on this guided walk with archaeologist James Sainsbury.

Beginning in the historic village of Burpham, whose roots stretch back to the Early Bronze Age, this walk explores a remarkable concentration of archaeological sites spanning several millennia. Visit Anglo-Saxon defensive earthworks and the beautiful early Norman church before heading onto the Downs to uncover a rich tapestry of archaeological remains. From ancient settlements and field systems to traces of later activity, the landscape reveals layer upon layer of human history.

Part of our Summer Archaeology Walk Programme, this walk offers a fascinating insight into how people have shaped and been shaped by this corner of Sussex over thousands of years.
